When Adding More Is the Wrong Move
Insulation removal and replacement is for attics where the existing insulation is part of the problem. Piling new material on top of wet, moldy or rodent-soiled insulation buries the trouble and keeps it there. In the Clearwater area the most common reasons we pull insulation out are roof leaks, storm water, pest contamination and old batts that have been crushed so flat they barely insulate.
Storm and water damage
Hurricane Helene came ashore on September 26, 2024, and Wikipedia's account of its effects counts more than 29,000 homes and businesses affected in Pinellas County, with over 17,000 destroyed or seriously damaged. Hurricane Milton followed in October 2024 and, according to Wikipedia's Pinellas County article, tore the roof off Tropicana Field. Roof damage from wind lets rain into attics, and storm surge soaked the lower walls of homes near the water. Wet fiberglass and cellulose do not dry back to their old performance, and they can hold moisture against drywall and framing. Once the roof is repaired and the space is dry, we remove the wet material and replace it.
Pests
Rats and other animals nest in attic insulation, tunnel through it and leave droppings and urine behind. After the pest company has dealt with the animals and sealed the entry points, we vacuum out the contaminated insulation, clean the attic floor and seal the ceiling before new insulation goes in. Doing it in that order keeps the new insulation clean.
Flattened, patchy and mixed insulation
Older attics often have layers of batts, loose fill and debris that have been walked on, pushed aside by AC and cable installers, or matted by past leaks. Sometimes the fastest path to a good result is to clear it out, seal every leak in the bare ceiling and blow fresh insulation to a known depth. It also gives us a clean look at the ductwork and the top of the ceiling.
Making room for roof deck foam
If you are moving insulation from the attic floor up to the roof deck, the old floor insulation can come out so the attic can be used for storage and air moves freely between the house and the attic. We price removal as its own line on the quote.
Materials we will not disturb
Some older homes contain vermiculite, a pebbly gray-brown loose fill that may contain asbestos. If we see it, we stop and recommend testing. Removal of asbestos-containing material is a job for a licensed abatement contractor, not an insulation crew.
How removal works
We set up a large vacuum outside, run the hose through the attic access, and pull the old insulation into bags for disposal. Living areas are covered and the attic hatch is sealed off to limit dust. After the floor is clear, we seal the ceiling and install new insulation. Most attics are done in one to two days.

How a Removal Job Runs
1. Inspect
We check what is there, why it needs to come out and whether anything needs testing first.
2. Quote
Removal, cleanup, air sealing and new insulation are priced as separate lines.
3. Remove
Old insulation is vacuumed out and bagged, with the house protected.
4. Seal and replace
The ceiling is sealed and new insulation installed to the written depth.

Insulation Removal & Replacement Questions
Do I need to remove old insulation before adding new?
Only if the old material is wet, moldy, contaminated or so compressed that it is in the way. Clean, dry insulation can usually stay with new material added on top.
Does homeowners insurance pay for wet insulation after a storm?
That depends on your policy and the cause of the damage. We can give you a written estimate and photos for your claim, but your insurer decides what is covered.
Is it safe to stay home during removal?
Usually yes. The vacuum truck or unit sits outside, the attic access is sealed off and living areas are covered. We will tell you if your job is different.
How do I know if my attic has vermiculite?
Vermiculite looks like small gray-brown or silvery pebbles. If you see it, do not disturb it and have it tested by a qualified lab before any work.
